Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

I finally broke down and bought a 3D Blu-ray movie just to see how well my TV could actually handle 3D, apparently I chose the wrong movie, the Resident Evil films have never been great movies but while it looked great in High Definition I thought this movie was a little weaker than the previous films in the series when it comes to plot and I was pretty disappointed by the 3D work in this movie, I don't know, I was just expecting it to be better, a couple of sequences looked nice but most of it seemed pretty half-assed.

Of course now that I've spend money on a 3D movie Panasonic finally deliver my 3D copy of Avatar but I just can't be bothered sitting there for three hours with silly glasses on to watch a movie I only thought was decent the first time around, maybe I'll watch a few action scenes sometime just to check out the 3D.

Catching Up

Over the course of the last 6 - 7 months I've watched a lot of movies, I always did watch a fair amount of films but thanks to the Podcast on Fire 365 movies in 365 Days challenge ( which I completed in around 6 months ) I really concentrated on movie watching, this didn't mean that was all I did but that is how I spent a lot of my spare time.

Now my movie watching has slowed down a lot and I've been concentrating on Television series and a couple of video games, most of what I've been watching in terms of Television series have been fairly old but I've really enjoyed them.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - I'm on to disc three of season one, I remember watching the show as a kid but I don't remember any black and white episodes so I don't know if I just never saw the first season or maybe I just forgot that they were in black and white.

What I've found interesting about this show is that a lot of the early episodes were fairly straight forward cold war stories, it didn't take too long for dinosaurs, aliens and mutant plankton monsters to start appearing in stories.

The Greatest American Hero - I loved this show in high school but I don't think I'd ever seen it since it's original Television broadcast in the early 80s, I saw the entire series on DVD going cheap a while back and grabbed it on a whim, it took me a while to get around to watching it as thinking about it afterwards I though it wouldn't have aged all that well and to an extent that's true but this show is still a lot of fun, the chemistry between the three lead actors is just great, I suspect you could have cast them in pretty much anything and it would've been worth watching.

Captain America - Another of my recent eBay purchases was a German DVD Box set featuring four 60's cartoons based the Marvel characters Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and The Sub-Mariner.

I watched the Captain America disc last night, the animation was extremely primitive and the stories were pretty corny but the show was a lot of fun.

I'm hoping to watch the other three DVDs sometime soon, with any luck they'll be just like this one.

X-Men: The Animated Series - A little while back I picked up a couple of compilation DVDs from this series cheap on ebay, yesterday I watched both The Legend of Wolverine and Wolverine's Story, as you might imagine with titles like that they feature stories that were heavily based around Wolverine.

I don't think I'd seen the show since it's original television broadcast but it was fun seeing it again, I think the entire series has been released on DVD, I think I'd like to pick it up one of these days and watch the entire series.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Another childhood favorite, this was a show that never took itself too seriously, in fact in the camp stakes it gives the 60s Batman TV series a good run for it's money, I picked up the complete series box set a couple of years ago and I'd watch the occasional episode here and there, at least until this last week when I've gotten through 8 episodes so far with the intention of watching more sometime soon, this is cheesy fun and apparently that's just what I need at the moment.

Movies Movies Movies

I haven't really done much other than watch a few movies lately, the weather has been pretty bad so I've been forced ( well not ACTUALLY forced ) to spend some quality time with my DVD player.

You Only Live Twice - This is my favorite James Bond film starring Sean Connery, Interestingly ( or perhaps not, I'll let you decide ) my favorite Bond film starring Roger Moore is The Spy Who Loved Me which had the same director and a very similar storyline.

The Day the Earth Stood Still ( 2008 ) - The original version of The Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic movie and a favorite of mine, as a rule I'm someone who gets very frustrated by the constant stream of remakes coming out of Hollywood and the announcement of this particular remake wasn't something I was pleased to hear about, add to that the casting of Keanu Reeves as Klaatu and I was sure the movie would be a disaster,

Now that I've actually seen the movie I can say it didn't suck, it wasn't great but it didn't suck, I remember reading a review somewhere, the reviewers name and where the review appeared escapes me but he wrote that he thought this movie should've been reworked as a sequel to the original film as he felt it would be interesting to have Klaatu return to Earth to discover humanity hadn't learned from it's mistakes and took matters into his own hands and I'm inclined to agree, I think that would've been a more interesting movie.

Flight of the Navigator - I picked this up on DVD a little while back while I was in the supermarket picking up some essential grocery items, bread milk and a movie, I guess I hadn't seen the movie in at least 20 years and I'd only ever seen it on VHS so I grabbed a copy, while in some respects it hadn't aged well I still had fun seeing it again, I've heard rumors of a remake, I think a sequel might be more interesting, in fact while I was watching the movie I found I actually wanted to know what would've happened next and that rarely happens to me anymore.

I've also recently seen some fun Asian films such as Wheels on Meals, Eastern Condors and the extremely over-rated Project A starring Jackie Chan, Project A has this reputation as being an amazing action movie but I found the first third of the movie very dull and boring, thankfully just when I was ready to give up on the movie it did finally get mildly interesting but it in my opinion just doesn't come close to deserving it's reputation.

Although it wasn't deliberate all of those movies featured at least two of The Three Dragons: Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao and Jackie Chan.

Fanboys

The year is 1999 and a group of hardcore Star Wars fans decide to travel across the country to the Lucasfilm ranch and steal a copy of The Phantom Menace so their terminally ill friend can see the movie before he dies of cancer.

On the face of it this movie is based on a brilliant idea and one I would seem fated to love, this movie should have been funny, touching and at the end a little bittersweet but it was just bland and that's a shame because the premise is brilliant and the cast seem to be trying hard with what is very inferior material but the laughs just weren't there.

The force wasn't strong with this one.

Christmas Doctor Who Style

Today my copy of the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special A Christmas Carol arrived on Blu-ray ( along with the classic third Doctor story The Mutants on DVD ).

Now I've always said that the Christmas specials should pretty much be taken lightly, they are after all made to be broadcast at Christmas, not usually a time for intense television viewing but having re-watched the special again today I found myself disappointed once I'd reached the end.

There are some great ideas in this special but somehow it all fails to gel into a cohesive whole, I especially loved the new style Star Trek-ish bridge on the starship and all those lens flares just like the J.J. Abrams reboot of the Star Trek movie series.

I like Matt Smith as the Doctor, I really do but so far he hasn't been given the greatest of material to work with, with any luck perhaps this year the new Doctor Who production team will find their feet and deliver some strong stories instead of mearly average ones.

Family Guy: It's a Trap

Last night I watched the final Family Guy Star Wars special It's a Trap and I'm sorry to say it just wasn't funny and that's a real shame, I enjoyed Blue Harvest and Something Something Something Darkside was ok but It's a Trap didn't even manage to make me smile.

This time around the producers went all out on the production side, the animation ( in widescreen ) looked fantastic and the audio sounded equally as good but sadly there just weren't any laughs to be had.

Perhaps they should have stopped after they made Blue Harvest.

I while back I picked up Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes on sale and today I was in the mood to watch something animated so I thought I'd give this series a try.

As far as stories go Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes is a little on the simplistic side for my tastes, the show is far from horrible and I know it's target audience is children but even keeping that in mind I've gotten to the end of some episodes unsure of what happened, there was fighting and superpowers but some stories were very light on actual story content, some of the character designs featured in this series are horrible, especially their version of Doctor Doom but the visuals are usually pretty decent.

So far Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes has been mildly disappointing but I'll probably watch an episode here and there until I've seen them all and if the first DVD is any indication I can see why it was so cheap.
